Wander Women – Fleur van Eeden

You’ve probably seen her in a movie without knowing it. This Swellendam farmgirl’s can-do attitude and unquenchable thirst for adventure paved the road for her to become an international stunt double.

From flying out of exploding buildings in the Namib to silk-fighting India, she’s doubled for an impressive list of actresses– including Drew Barrymore, Lena Hedely, Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren. She is also part of the team of crazy South Africans that holds the Guinness World Record for the most people being on fire for the longest period at the same time! It seems there is nothing she won’t do and nowhere she won’t go…

Until a few years ago when she decided to give up her illustrious international film career and move home. She missed her family and her small-town country life. She missed Swellendam.

Her energy and enthusiasm didn’t burn out or come to a small-town halt though. She is still an extreme thrill seeker that rides horses, runs trails, canoes, hikes and recently started farming. Now a normal day includes tending to her chickens or sowing and cropping wheat.

Last year she helped the town of Swellendam develop and lay out excellent mountain bike routes all around the area. Her involvement with the community also extends to the less fortunate. She often cycles with a group of kids from the neighboring town, Suurbraak, encouraging them to spend more time outside and explore their beautiful part of South Africa.

In another project, along with her late 97-year-old grandmother, she started making documentaries about the locals of Swellendam, telling their stories and teaching young, disadvantaged kids about filmmaking and life behind as well as in front of the camera.

Fleur’s lust for life is infectious and her energy is an embodiment of the principle that we can all live a little more outside. She is a true ambassador for the outdoor life. A Wander Woman.
